The office is doing a little Christmas lunch thing today - should be a nice change of pace form my usual pasta or hamburger. Unfortunately, they're also doing a silly gift exchange thing - I don't like office gift exchanges, and I don't think I ever will.

"So, I get to waste $10 on a generic present suitable for anyone in the office, and in turn, I'll get a $10 generic present. Wow, sign me up."

Or the other popular format, Secret Santa.

"So, I draw the name of a person that, in all likelihood, I don't know what they like, and have to get them something bland and inoffensive, and in return, someone does the same for me. Whee."

Now, I'm more materialistic that a lot of folks, I do appreciate the accumulation of Christmas lucre from my family. But there's actual sentiment there. They buy me gifts (and I, them) because they want to. Not because some busybody decided their idea of holiday "fun" was good enough to inflict on the whole office.

At least - and thank heaven for it - this one isn't mandatory, or even 'suggested participation.' I was given and did exercise the option to ignore it. So I can't complain too much - though I wonder what people see in such things.
