Someone forgot to feed the hamsters, I guess.

My heads hurts. I am having to deal with a very demanding (and simultaneously ignorant) person in another department at work; I re-wrote a process that used to require IT intervention to run into one they could use without us, and the news was greeted with "you should have asked us, here's a list of half a dozen vital changes to that process that we need now".. that they haven't needed in the six years its been running in its current form.

In other words, her tone is "Queen Bossypants."

.. this is a woman who once pitched a fit to my supervisor because I bolded a word in an email to her to clarify an explanation that she wasn't getting after three tries.

I've asked my supervisor to address the issue of her tone, but I'm not optimistic. My supervisor is a nice guy - we both had a laugh about the bold text thing - but he's absolutely avoidant of conflict. I guess I'll just have to prioritize her 'requests' appropriately.

A few hiccups this morning. Things are quieting down now, though, so maybe I'll have a nap on this soft, lovely keyboard..

At least they're getting pasta for the food. I like pasta.

I have a high-profile project with a deadline coming up, my boss is on vacation, and the other guy who knows how to do most of the things I do is out three days for training this week.

So I have to work all-out on the project while constantly answering the damn phone for every problem that comes up.

My head hurts.

Tired

Not physically tired, just.. tired of dealing with people. Not a good thing to be, considering it's Monday morning.

One of my number-one pet peeves is having to repeat myself. I give someone information. They then make a statement or ask a question that indicates that they haven't received that information. So I have to repeat myself. I would worry that it's due to a lack of clarity in my communication, but experience (and the simplicity of the conveyed information) has indicated otherwise - people just don't pay any goddamn attention when they should be paying attention.

Seriously, I'm working on a tech support ticket, and there are two versions of the software in question, and the guy asks "Are you using X, Y, or both?" and I say "We use X. We do not use Y. We're not set up to use Y." And his next sentence about troubleshooting the problem is "In Y, do blah blah.." with no mention of what to do in X.

Grraaaah.

New PC!

I have three monitors now. Only two are working, because there's something misconfigured, but that'll be fixed soon, I hope. Got to download and install all the lovely bits of software I need..

My new workstation will be here soon. This one's five or six years old and runs Vista. I will be pleased.

It's one of those days at work where I have to deal with Oracle Support, which is the IT equivalent to the ninth circle of Hell. How can such a large company manage to endure, and even prosper, with one of the slowest, most useless support sites in the world? It defies belief.

6:40 A.M. - I awaken, look at the clock, and briefly ponder the idea of getting up early. I dismiss it and return to sleep.
7:10 A.M. - I get up, and get ready for work.
7:45 A.M. - I leave the house.
8:00 A.M. - I arrive at work.
8:01 A.M. - My brain checks out in anticipation of the two -week vacation that starts at 4 P.M.

I do not foresee productivity for today.

I'm back at work. And immediately, slammed with phone calls about various minor issues. Welcome back to hell, I guess. Well, not hell. I can't even call it that while being hyperbolic. But it is sure annoying.

I have my big vacation in a little over a month. I should be able to make it until then.

After a big server change this past weekend, things have gone relatively smoothly - in that there were no major problems. But there have been too many minor issues here and there, and I think my eye is twitching every time my computer chimes to let me know I've got a new email, because I'm wondering what fresh (albeit tiny) hell awaits me.

Looks like I'll have relatively little to do, other than indulge in video games - this is a good thing. I need a break. I've scheduled some vacation in April, but I've been really frazzled at work, trying to juggle fifteen billion little details.

But it'll ease up on March 31st when I can roll out this new software and don't have to think about testing it anymore.

Busy Busy

Kind of a packed day at work, so I won't ramble on much. Caught the apple cider episode of My Little Pony last night, and enjoyed that fairly well. Favorite bit is a toss-up between the Flim-Flam brothers (and accompanying musical number) and Applejack's "I didn't learn nuthin'" letter to Celestia.

I may have that slightly wrong.

I very nearly called off of work this morning after my sleep was sabotaged by my sinuses, which were doing their usual response to widely fluctuating temperatures. I resolved, though, that we've got one guy on vacation and my supervisor is out today getting car repairs done, so I'm the only person who knows how to support certain critical stuff. So I pulled myself together and dragged myself in. Good thing, too - there was a major problem this morning that I had to work through.

I've started watching My Little Pony : Friendship is Magic, Season Two. So far, I've seen My Little Ponies vs. Internet Memes (a two-parter) and My Little Ponies vs. Obsessive Compulsive Disorder. At least, those are the titles in my head.

The downside of my job happens pretty infrequently, but it happened this morning. I was awakened early by a phone call indicating that one of the key servers was down. As I'm closest, I got ready, scraped the ice off my truck (in ten degree weather) and hauled myself in - only to discover that the server had already been rebooted by the C.I.O., who'd come in early today.

Oh well, at least I can leave an hour early as a trade-off.

I finally got in some quality time with Soul Calibur 5 after dedicating Sunday as 'video game day'. I'm clearly out of practice, but it's fun so far.

Late Start

I put in some hours this past weekend, so I didn't feel bad when I woke up this morning feeling like I needed a little more sleep - I told my boss I'd be in late, and grabbed an extra hour of shut-eye. Felt great!

I watched a Roger Corman film last night - Forbidden World, AKA Mutant. It's a 1982 Aliens rip-off, and it's actually (in the context of a B movie) pretty damn good. I bet there aren't too many movies that'll have you cheering 'Yay, Cancer!' at the end.

I feel like I've made this post before. I'm actually having a pleasantly slow couple of days at work, which pleases me immensely. Users are testing a couple of things that I have rolled out, to approve them for 'production', so I'm kind of waiting on that, which is nice. I did just find out yesterday that Soul Calibur 5 was released, which means there's another damn thing I need to buy and another damn game that I won't get to finish to my satisfaction, but I'm basically powerless to resist doing so anyway. How the devil do these games keep sneaking up on me?

There are webinars that masquerade as training but are, in reality, sales pitches. Oracle likes these.

And then there are webinars that spend too much time catering to the lowest common denominator. Yes, we know what single sign-on is. Please get to the point already. I'm in one of those now.

Back in the office today, after an interesting weekend with some computer trouble, about which I will surely blog later.

Bad Roads

Workin' from home. Man, I hate winter.
candidgamera: (Default)
I'm exhausted and irritable. Not getting enough sleep. The transition back to a normal sleep schedule is always a rough one. Fortunately, I have mostly caught up on the backlog of work stuff, and can start moving forward with projects again. And even take a few minutes out for reading the internet - I am particularly enjoying the Daily WTF site, specifically their feature articles about IT nightmares.

I've been reading Shadows Over Baker Street, an anthology of Sherlock Holmes / Lovecraft mash-up stories. I really like it so far. I think I bought it four or five years ago.
