Lists of Lists
Jan. 17th, 2013 10:08 amSomeday I will die in the middle of making a list. I'm too fascinated by them.
Now, I know good sites for making lists of video games, of DVDs, of RPGs, and of Anime / Manga. Owned, seen, played, what-have-you.
I am also aware of the existence of sites for making lists of comic books, movies, and books - but I've never run into one of those that was both 1.) free and 2.) useful. Most of the online comic book databases were awful the last time I looked; the only 'movies seen' site I know of is IMDB, which is cumbersome; and as for 'books read or owned', I honestly haven't looked around recently.
So, anyone have any recommendations?

Video Game Progress
Jan. 16th, 2013 10:08 amOne of my goals over the Christmas Break was to try out or complete a number of the video games I've piled up. I had a notion of 'a game a day' - pop one in, try it out, move on.
Well, I didn't achieve that, but I did finish several games to my satisfaction - enough to delete (on the PC) or sell (on a console) the game in question. Dragon Quest IV I have finished for the second time (on the NES ages ago, and now on the DS). Pokemon Heartgold is done except for a boss battle, and I completed the Platinum Pokedex as a result. Once I do some trading around, I should be able to put Pearl and Diamond to bed for good. I finished Scribblenauts and Super Scribblenauts enough to satisfy myself. I deleted Torchlight (superseded by its sequel) and a couple of minor Steam games I'd been trying out, and I started playing Warhammer 40K : Dawn of War. I'm working on Dragon Quest 9 now.
Feels good to make some progress.

Bright Spot
Dec. 13th, 2012 09:47 amI've been in a pretty bleak mood for the last few days - and I can't really pinpoint anything that specifically triggered it recently. I don't think my usual ironclad optimism ever fully recovered from the quadruple whammy of "Grandmother dying, City of Heroes closing, Emergency room visit for possible kidney stone, and a week of being unable to eat normally due to bad medicine reaction."
So it was nice to get a little bright spot this week. Someone figured out a hack you can use atop existing City of Heroes installations - it lets you get into character creation, meaning that CoH's world-class costume creator is accessible, even with the servers down. I'd already deleted my installation, but was able to download it anew.
It's not much, but it helps.

Cleaning Up
Dec. 7th, 2012 09:53 amI deleted City of Heroes yesterday - after backing up my screenshots and saved costume files. I'm pondering where to put the screenshots - I have a Tumblr and a Photobucket, but I also tried Picasa way back when - maybe I should give it another go.
I could probably stand to delete DCU Online and Star Trek Online as well - the likelihood of me getting back into either is pretty slim.

Ups and Downs
Dec. 3rd, 2012 10:11 amI was incredibly saddened by the loss of City of Heroes. I logged in for the last few hours and just hung around with other members of the Straight Dope supergroup that made it online. Went to bed miserably sad.
On Saturday, I put up a Christmas Tree in my house for the first time. My parents are actually bringing Christmas to me this year. That should be a nice change of pace.

City of Heroes ends Friday. I've been wanting to get back into it since the end was announced, and I finally made some time last night to log in and re-familiarize myself with the controls. Hopefully tonight and tomorrow I can play through a few more of the awesome missions before it shuts down for good.
One of the things I will miss most? The game's ragdoll physics engine, wherein you could send a bad guy flying and his unconscious body would get snagged on a tree, twitching hideously, until it de-spawns. Never fails to make me laugh.

Purchase Controls
Oct. 29th, 2012 10:53 amI'm not sure how it works, but whenever I feel stressed, one of the things that helps more than anything else I can do is spending money. Even if I'm stressed about spending too much money.
It's a therapy that could be worse than the problem, in the wrong dose.
So, I bought a Nintendo 3DS XL. I justified it to myself by reasoning that my DS Lite will not last forever, and the screen's so nice and big, and I won't have to reconfigure my wi-fi every time I want to connect Pokemon to the internet, and..
Basically, it boils down to the fact that I saw a new toy, and some part of my brain wanted the new toy.
In other news, had a fun movie night with friends on Saturday, with a horror theme - Brotherhood of the Wolf, My Mom's a Werewolf (as a BAD movie selection), and (because we were wolfed out..) Dead Heat. Fun!

X-Com : Enemy Unknown is out today - a remake and update of one of my favorite games of all time. I'm very excited for it, but I am considering holding off on buying it - because I am swamped with other games to play. This has just been a killer year for quality releases.
Speaking of, Pokemon Black 2 and White 2 are fun, so far!

City of Heroes
Sep. 7th, 2012 09:40 amI did a series of screenshots last night, along with transcribing the various character background blurbs. I'm going to miss the costume creator bit the most of all, I think - I had several dozen renditions of existing DC Comics heroes and villains done in that costume creator that I was pretty proud of.
I would seriously pay good money for a standalone 3D costume generator in the style of CoH's.
If the shutdown goes through, and if time permits, I want to be there, logged in, when it goes down.

Summary of Week in Progress
Sep. 5th, 2012 10:44 amBullet list, go :
To sum up : Goddamnit. Couple of good things, but overall? Goddamnit. I need a good week at some point in the near future, because it's been a while.
- Ended up with pallbearer duty at the funeral.
- Managed to find rare Ghost Rider action figure I'd been looking for.
- Making excellent progress on my Pokemon collection.
- Apparently passed a kidney or bladder stone amidst pain and blood, ending up in the emergency room at 1:30AM Monday morning.
- And I just learned City of Heroes is unexpectedly shutting down.

Apparently, I picked the right time to finally get into the franchise, with Platinum, a few years ago. Because I've been playing Emerald, from the previous generation, and you know what? It's a pain in the ass. No False Swipe to make capturing easier. No Lucky Egg item to boost XP gain. No consistent XP-farming area, for that matter.
In Platinum, I can go surf the seas of the end-game areas, and fight high-level Tentacruels and rake in the XP, but Emerald? Pfft. Levels vary from 6 to 36, at best, and they're Wingulls and Tentacools. Entirely too grindy.
I need to snag a couple of legendaries from Emerald, and then I technically won't need anything else from the G-3 games, so maybe then I can put them down..

Painting Progress
Aug. 7th, 2012 12:33 pmSo my plan was to, over the course of the summer, finish painting and assembling a small, play-legal Warhammer force. I estimated that I'd have plenty of time to do 500 points worth of miniatures properly. Then a bunch of video games came out, and I started my Legion game, and I lost June and July.
Oops.
Well, in any case, I'm getting close on my second set of five soldiers. After them, I should probably tackle the Commander next, because that'll take a little while. Then I'd just need one more 'troops' unit to have a painted, ready-to-field force..
Well, I'll get there eventually. This weekend, I am hoping to run my D&D game, so I can't spend all my evenings painting, this week - got to do some preparation!

Lay Down the Burden
Jul. 6th, 2012 09:58 am.. of Lego Batman 2, that is. Got all the achievements, checked the last box, and done. I've had a surprisingly productive week in terms of clearing out hobby backlogs. Maybe I will get back to miniature painting this month!
No, probably not. But I'll try, dammit.
Running my Legion game on Saturday! Looking forward to it.

Lego Superman?
Jun. 25th, 2012 01:11 pmI am almost done with Lego Batman 2, and I have to say, Superman is the MVP of that game. I love that when you fly with him, the background music shifts to the John Williams Superman title theme. Blasting a room full of objects with his heat vision is awesome. Freezing bad guys with his Super-Breath is almost as good.
I think he deserves his own Lego game, but it might be hard to make reasonable challenges for the man with every power.
The game includes these as playable characters, for the record : Batman, Robin (Dick), Superman, Green Lantern, Wonder Woman, Flash, Cyborg, Martian Manhunter, Aquaman, Hawkman and Hawkgirl, Huntress, Batgirl, Black Canary, Commissioner Gordon, Alfred, Lois Lane, Vicki Vale, Clark Kent, Bruce Wayne, Dick Grayson, Joker, Lex Luthor, Penguin, Riddler, Man-Bat, Ra's al Ghul, Mr. Freeze, Killer Moth, Mad Hatter, Bane, Poison Ivy, Catwoman, Brainiac, Zod, Captain Boomerang, Sinestro, Two-Face, Harley Quinn, Scarecrow, Killer Croc .. I think that's all the non-thug people, except for the one I haven't unlocked which I believe is Supergirl.
And if that's not enough, I got five more characters as a pre-order bonus from Amazon : Nightwing, Robin (Damian), Katana, Captain Marvel, and Zatanna!

Man, two week vacations are awesome.
So I had fun at Origins, though it was a slower year than most. I'll write more about that on my official nerd-blog which is syndicated to the LJ Feed over here. Suffice to say, a good time was had as I enjoyed board game events, Warhammer, RPG sessions, and a double-dose of the Smithees.
Most of last week has been dedicated to video games - Diablo III and Pokemon : Ruby - but I did squeeze in enough time to clean out a closet. Got to run what may be my final session (for now) of my Golden Age game on Saturday, paving way for the Legion game I've been wanting to do.
